Vale Gastone (Tony) Zanetto (1935–2026)

We are saddened by the passing of one of our founding members, Tony Zanetto, at 91 years of age.

Born in Padua in northern Italy, Tony was a talented footballer who represented Italy at under-15 schoolboy level. Despite his father’s objections to him playing, Tony made the journey to Australia in 1954 in pursuit of opportunity and the game he loved.

Arriving in Launceston, Tony quickly made his mark on local football, playing for the Dutch Australian Association and Roma before helping establish Juventus in 1958.

Northern Tasmanian football didn’t know what had hit it. Crowds swelled to 600 spectators at Coronation Park, and the arrival of the black and white stripes transformed the local game.

Renowned for his skill and confidence as a defender, one story often told was of Tony sitting on the ball during play, inviting opponents closer before dribbling away. The act even inspired well-known Polish migrant Alex Szolomiak to draw a picture of him sitting on the ball in 1961.

Tony earned representative honours with Northern Tasmania and Tasmania, including an appearance against touring English giants Chelsea in 1965.

Before moving to Hobart in 1963 to play and coach Juventus, Tony helped establish the foundations of a successful club, winning four consecutive Northern League and Knockout Cup doubles and the 1961 State Championship.

We extend our sincere condolences to Tony’s wife Leonie, children Paul, Steven, Philip, Mario and Tanya, his grandchildren, extended family and friends.

The Zanetto name has become one of Tasmania’s most respected footballing families, all stemming from a young man who simply wanted to play the game he loved.

Thank you, Tony.

Your legacy will never be forgotten.
Over the weekend, an U12 team from our Opal. Juventus Academy travelled to Queensland for the Premier Invitational where they fought it out against 96 other teams playing 9 games in 3 days.
In what was their first experience of an interstate tournament the team did extremely well.

After a tough first day of grading games, they went onto compete extremely well across the remaining two days, finishing the weekend with a mix of wins, draws, losses and getting to experience their first ever penalty shoot out.

More importantly though, from their first game to their last game, the coaches saw immense improvement both individually and collectively which is what these experiences are all about.

Away from the football, the players were also given the opportunity to grow as individuals - developing independence, resilience and stronger bonds as a team.

Well done to those involved for what looks like a fantastic weekend of football.
🖤🤍 🤩

Launceston City Football Club is incredibly proud to welcome home a record 13 players from the Football Australia Talent Identification Cup in Victoria.

To have so many LCFC players selected to represent at this level is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the talent, dedication and hard work of this outstanding group.

Throughout the tournament, they represented themselves, their families, their state and our club with pride, embracing every opportunity and showcasing the values that make our club so proud.

🖤Under 14s: Campbell, Sashan, Will, Cooper, Oscar, Jasper, Shalom, Kai and Ella.

🤍Under 13s: Quinn, Kruze, Max and Hunter.

We also congratulate and thank Chelsea Wing and Hollie Jones, who supported the group throughout the campaign as Football Tasmania Head Coach and Assistant Coach.

A special mention to Cooper and Oscar, who were unfortunately sidelined by injury but still travelled to Victoria to support their teammates as team managers. Along with their wonderful mums, who made the journey with them! What legends 🙏🏻

Finally, thank you to the families, supporters and volunteers who continue to provide encouragement and support behind the scenes. Achievements like these are only possible because of the strength of our football community.

Congratulations to all involved on this outstanding achievement and for representing LCFC with such distinction. 🖤🤍⚽️
Good luck to our U12 Opal. Juventus Academy group, who are heading to the Gold Coast this weekend to compete in the Premier Invitational.
We love seeing past Launceston City FC and Opal. Juventus Academy players continuing their football journeys and finding success at higher levels.

A huge congratulations to Gene Spotswood on an outstanding first season in Victorian football with Bulleen Lions.

Gene helped his side win the Victorian Division 1 U16 Championship, while also enjoying an incredible individual season with a clean sweep of awards; winning the Best & Fairest, being voted Players’ Player, and sharing the Golden Boot.

It’s fantastic to see Gene embracing the opportunity to challenge himself in a new environment and being rewarded for his commitment and effort over a long period of time.

Congratulations, Gene! Everyone at Launceston City FC is proud to see you doing so well and looks forward to following what comes next.
